ChatGPT, tracked
A ChatGPT rank tracker that measures citations
ChatGPT doesn't rank pages in fixed positions, so Growth Radar tracks what can be measured: whether ChatGPT's answers cite your site for questions your audience asks, how many visits arrive from chatgpt.com or with a ChatGPT tag, and whether OpenAI's crawlers can read your pages. Each reading carries its sample size and date.
What it measures, and how
Three readings, kept apart. A citation without a visit, or a crawl without a citation, each points at a different fix.
- ChatGPT answer probes
- Questions a site should answer are sent to ChatGPT. The sites each answer cites are recorded, and questions that name your brand are kept out of the rate.
- ChatGPT referrals
- Visits that arrive with chatgpt.com as the referrer, plus visits whose referrer was stripped but whose link carries ChatGPT's utm_source tag, counted in the site's own analytics. A visit proves a citation existed.
- OpenAI crawler hits
- Server-side hits from GPTBot, which collects pages for OpenAI's models, and OAI-SearchBot, which indexes pages for ChatGPT search answers. A hit counts only when its IP is verified against OpenAI's published ranges.
Why there's no ChatGPT rank
A search results page has positions one to ten. A ChatGPT answer has a handful of cited sources that change each time the question is asked, and a person's own conversation history, location and plan can change them again. A single position would be a snapshot of one draw.
So the tracker reports a citation rate with its n and interval: how many questions were asked, how many answers cited the site, and the range that allows. When a fix aimed at ChatGPT ships, the rate at ship time is recorded and the change is graded later.
What it can't see
- ChatGPT is probed every day.
- An API answer isn't the answer a signed-in person sees in the ChatGPT app, which can use memory and location.
- No share of voice, mention position or sentiment for ChatGPT answers, and no estimate of how often people ask a question: OpenAI publishes no query volumes.
- Referrals are a floor: an answer read and never clicked leaves no trace, and some app visits arrive with no referrer at all.

Common questions
Can you track your rank in ChatGPT?
Not as a fixed position, because ChatGPT doesn't have one: the cited sources change each time you ask. What can be tracked is how often its answers cite your site for a set of questions, with the sample size behind that rate.
How do I see if ChatGPT mentions my brand?
Ask it the questions your customers would ask, many times, and record which sites each answer cites. Growth Radar's probes do this and leave out questions that name your brand, because asking about yourself measures the question rather than the market.
How often should ChatGPT answers be checked?
Often enough to see a trend, because each answer is one draw. Growth Radar's scheduled sweep runs every day. Each rate is shown with the number of answers behind it.
Which OpenAI crawler matters for ChatGPT citations?
OAI-SearchBot, which indexes pages for ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot collects pages for OpenAI's models and is a separate choice in robots.txt. Growth Radar counts verified hits from both, so you can see whether the one that feeds answers reaches your pages.
Is the ChatGPT probe the same answer my customers see?
Not exactly. The probe is close to what a logged-out person sees, but a signed-in person's answer can differ with memory, location and plan. That's why the rate is shown with its interval.
